Amsterdam Central Station
Amsterdam Central Station was built on three artificial islands in the late nineteenth century. Nine thousand wooden piles support the station against subsidence in the sandy subsoil. Flanked by two towers, the station’s main entrance looks more like a city gate, and that’s the intention – you should feel like you’re entering and leaving the city through a gate. The reliefs on the towers show scenes from trade, industry and shipping.

New danger mark

New danger marks are used to mark new dangers such as wrecks, sandbanks or rocks not yet included in the charts. These buoys are blue and yellow in colour. They may have a perpendicular cross as a top-mark.
