Rotterdam, Seaport
The Holland America Lijn shipping company (HAL) ran a transatlantic passenger liner service from Rotterdam for more than a century, and nearly a million emigrants to North America passed through Rotterdam from 1880 to 1925. The administration building housed the Hotel New York, which has since opened its doors again after a period of closure. Water taxis are a unique guest service – the taxi company helped Danuta Karsten in her search for a buoy depot.


Special marks
Special marks are used for special areas such as military training areas or cables and pipes in the water; charts will have further information. These buoys are yellow in colour. They may have a diagonal cross as a top-mark. These are cylinder, light, spar, or pillar buoys.
